Blaine Capone - The Whelming Parts I & II.

I was delighted to receive a (personalized) catalogue of Blaine Capone's current exhibition in the post the other day.

The Whelming was designed to coincide with Prospect.2 (which incidentally closes this weekend) and is such a mammoth undertaking that it could only have been tackled in two parts.

I'm gutted that I didn't get the chance to see either part in person, but for anyone that isn't quite as far away as New Zealand, you have until February18th to get down to Coup d'Oeil in New Orleans to see it.

Final Study for a Portrait of Salome with the Head of John the Baptist has been selected as a finalist for the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award 2012.

The exhibition, at the Whakatane Memorial Complex is open for 10 days, over the two long weekends - Auckland Anniversary weekend and Waitangi weekend.

Hours: Saturday 28th January daily until Sunday 5th February, 10am - 5.00pm and for the final day Monday 6th February 10am - 3pm.

Anselm Kiefer: Il Mistero delle Cattedrali. White Cube, Bermondsey.

Anselm Kiefer's 'Il Mistero delle Cattedrali' at White Cube Bermondsey is the largest presentation of Kiefer's work ever made in London and spans 11,000 sq ft of gallery space.

If time had permitted I would have gone back to see it the next day, the day after that and so on.
I'm eagerly awaiting the catalog , even though looking at photos of his work feels a little pointless.

From the Press Release:

The title of the exhibition is taken from the esoteric publication by Fulcanelli (published in 1926), which claimed that the Gothic cathedrals of Europe had openly displayed the hidden code of alchemy for over 700 years. As with all Kiefer's work, allusions are never literal but reflect an ongoing interest in systems - mystical and material - which have evolved over centuries. Both title and exhibition reflect Kiefer's longtime fascination with the transformative nature of alchemy: 'The ideology of alchemy is the hastening of time, as in the lead-silver-gold cycle which needed only time in order to transform lead into gold. In the past the alchemist sped up this process with magical means. That was called magic. As an artist I don't do anything differently. I only accelerate the transformation that is already present in things. That is magic, as I understand it.'

All of the large-scale canvases on show use landscape as its starting point. Thereafter, Kiefer works on each of them rigorously and with intense physicality and some of the canvases are exposed to the elements. In addition, for this exhibition, many of the large-scale works have undergone an accelerated process of oxidisation. Consequently, images that may be seen to evoke the sublime are themselves subjected to the subtle but immense power of natural forces. 'You have to find a golden path between controlling and not controlling, between order and chaos' Kiefer has observed. 'If there is too much order, it is dead; if there is too much chaos, it doesn't cohere. I'm continually negotiating a path between these two extremes.'

As well as the over-arching theme of alchemy, Kiefer continues to wrestle with various history, notably twentieth century Germany. Among the most striking and monumental of all his recent motifs is that of Tempelhof Airport in Berlin. Finally closed in 2008, it is among the most charged and culturally loaded of buildings. Built in 1927 on land once belonging to the medieval Knights Templar, the airport was redesigned in the following decade as part of Albert Speer's master plan for the Nazi reconstruction of Berlin. The vast complex was intended as Hitler's gateway to Europe and as a symbol of his 'world capital', Germania. It was never finished but witnessed military activity during the Cold War and was seen by many as a forerunner of the airports of the late twentieth century, in its grandeur and ambition. In Kiefer's vast canvases, Tempelhof is transformed into a latter day cathedral, or a mystical site of aspiration, of absurdity, even apocalypse.

A couple of snaps from the Gerhard Richter show, Panorama at Tate Modern. The 'intriguing' angles are because you weren't allowed to take photos and I'm not that sneaky.

During and in the days since, I'm aware of just how much I preferred Gerhard Richter - Forty Years of Painting at SFMOMA in 2002. It is the first time I have seen two different survey shows by the same artist. There were certainly a couple of notable omissions at the Tate and I believe (but could be wrong) the 2002 show had more works (140). For me, this was my first obvious illustration of the role/skill/influence of the curator.

Any disappointment at not having the time to make it over to Germany while I was back in the U.K for Christmas, was quickly ameliorated by the amount of German Art on show in London.

GESAMTKUNSTWERK: New art from Germany at the Saatchi Gallery, Gerhard Richter - Panorama at Tate Modern and Anselm Kiefer - Il Mistero delle Cattedrali at White Cube, Bermondsey. The latter is Kiefer's largest ever show in London, was THE highlight of my trip and may be the best gallery show I've ever had the chance to see in person.

From the 4th to the 7th of August 2011, the Auckland Art Fair will host the best galleries in Australia and New Zealand showing some of the freshest and most exciting art and artists.

Coinciding with Auckland Art Fair, Tarred and Feathered will run from August 1^st to 14^th at, 22 McColl Street in Newmarket (adjacent to Auckland’s prestigious Tim Melville and Fox/Jensen galleries).

With an opening reception on Tuesday August 2^ndfrom 5.30 – 9pm, this 2 person show will feature sculpture by Karley Feaver and painting by Chris Dennis.

To be tarred and feathered was an unofficially sanctioned form of public display. It was designed as a punishment and to force the subject to change their ways or run them out of town.

In August 2011 we hope that won't be the case and look forward to seeing you.

Karley Feaver grew up in New Plymouth and is now living in Auckland. She works across a range of disciplines including painting, sculpture and taxidermy. In 1997, Karley spent 2 years at Wellington School of Design studying Industrial Design, before moving to Auckland to study 3D design at Unitec. Karley has exhibited throughout New Zealand and her works are held in private collections in the UK, Australia, Russia and New Zealand.

My works offer a vision of a world where fantasy and reality merge into infinite possibilities, uncertainty, and wonder. Themes such as life, death, beauty, restriction and escapism are explored, sometimes from moments or happenings I experience in my life. My use of taxidermy can evoke powerful emotions and inspire our morbid curiosity surrounding death. Representations of humans are introduced in the form of dolls and the choice of animal is deliberate and used as a symbolic reference to the themes I explore in my work.

Chris Dennis grew up in, England. He studied natural history illustration at Bournemouth and Poole College of Art and this classical training is evident in his current therianthropic work. After completing his BA (Hons) at the University of Wolverhampton he relocated to the United States, and in 2000 earned his MFA from the University of Art in San Francisco. In 2010 after a period in Berlin, Chris made Auckland his permanent home. He has exhibited in the UK, Germany and across the United States.

My paintings are perhaps best described as ‘Narrative expressionism’ or ‘internalized portraiture’. The stories behind these ‘Therianthropic’ pieces have been carefully obfuscated and invite the viewer to create their own narrative, bringing to mind facets or emotions that maybe more difficult to confront if not disguised behind a mask.

Cliftons Art Prize 2011

Self-Portrait of Harry White I has been selected as a finalist at the regional stage of the Cliftons Art Prize. The piece can be seen from June 1st at the Cliftons venue in Auckland along with the other finalists: Kathryn Stevens, Rosanne Croucher, Julian Mckinnon, Isla Osborne and Melinda Butt. A reception/prize announcement will be held on June 16th from 6-8pm at Level 2, 45 Queen Street.

From the Living Room Site: Gregory Bennett and Michael Hodgson will use digital animation at an architectural scale to re-invent the Eastern façade of Queen Street’s iconic Smith & Caughey building, built in 1927 and designed by American architect Roy Lippincott.

Situated in close proximity to the entertainment facilities of The Edge, this monolithic Metropolis-style tower provides an ideal canvas on which to project Bennett’s performing figures. These figures explore complex group dynamics, inspired in part by the Art Deco-era cinematic dance extravaganzas of Busby Berkeley. Bennett’s most recent works situate figures in architectural tableau, with each group contributing a specific function to a mysterious, greater purpose - all cogs in a big city structure.

Developed into a site-specific outdoor presentation with Michael Hodgson, a world-specialist in large-scale projection events and renowned sound artist, together they explore the choreographic interplay between the moving figure and architecture, which structures the way we negotiate a city.

'Metropolis Dreaming' - Living Room.

Living Room, Auckland Council’s annual 10-day public art event, kicks off again in April. It will feature artists from all over the world, as well as some well-known local faces. There will be a mix of installations, performances, sound art, video projections and a poster project.

In 2011 Living Room is titled Metropolis Dreaming. The planned artworks will encourage us to re-imagine our day-to-day urban surroundings, rediscovering ordinary, overlooked and hidden details of the city.

Metropolis Dreaming spotlights the actual mechanics of a city’s systems, transforming its functional, everyday structures from a routine backdrop into imaginative possibilities. It is a celebration of post-industrial urban life and takes its inspiration from the excitement the Italian Futurist movement felt at the start of the 20th century for the clamour and bustle of the new, kinetic environment of the machine age.

100 years later, Living Room acknowledges that the city is both a cultural and technological hub, so will include social projects that highlight the human dynamics of urban life.

Brendan McGorry - God's little Launderette

The general consensus (and rightly so) was that the highlight of the wholly successful White Night in Auckland was God's little Launderette by Brendan McGorry.

To quote Janet McAllister in the NZ Herald - "The most impressive, out-of-the-ordinary, free-thinking White Night effort we saw was artist Brendan McGorry's. He and his family generously welcomed all-comers into his Upper Symonds St converted-shop home, where he had created a viewer-encapsulating installation, God's Little Launderette, as full of symbolism as the Rosslyn Chapel".

Coup is pleased to herald the start of a new year with d e t r i t u s : paintings by Chris Dennis. After spending the last year in Berlin and Auckland, Chris returns to New Orleans for his second solo show at the gallery. He describes this new collection of carefully obfuscated narratives as "unapologetically small". These new, intimately-sized, mixed media paintings where surface is sometimes the initial subject, seamlessly incorporate a variety of found materials and alternative media.

Beneath the surface, Chris continues to direct his now recognizable Therianthropic figures (often possessing the head of a fish or a bird) in landscapes and settings where the depiction of the external hints at the internal. Bad jokes, confessions, memories, and untruths are scattered (sometimes buried), offering clues to the stories within. The show runs from January 15 through February 5, 2011.

BRIGHTON— Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke is putting his celebrity to good use, helping catalyze volunteers for a massive experiment in global crowdsourced art, set for November 27 in Brighton, England. The giant-sized spectacle is part of Earth350, a week of art actions spearheaded by environmentalist Bill McKibben, who has called on volunteers from around the world to form massive pictures, often with their bodies, that will be photographed from space by satellites. The events are timed to take place in the lead-up to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico, running from November 29 to December 10, to demonstrate public consciousness of global warming.

Yorke's particular project for Earth350 aims to bring together 2,000 volunteers for a massive living portrait of King Canute, a Viking king of England who according to leged tried, but failed, to command the ocean to stop its waves. The image was conceived by the singer along with artist Stanley Donwood, who has been responsible for Radiohead's album art since the band began.

"Please also note that we will create the human sculpture even if it rains and is stormy, since weather is a central character in this art piece," a Web announcement for the event tells would-be volunteers. "Yes, this sounds mad but since we're recreating the story of King Canute it works."

Art exhibitions centered on the relationship between humans and other creatures, The Multispecies Salon 3: Swarm, will open in the St. Claude Arts District of New Orleans on November 13, 2010 from 6 pm to 10 pm and will run through December 5^th.

Spawned by the annual conference of the 2010 American Anthropological Association (AAA), this year convening in New Orleans, the Multispecies Salon will explore relations between humans and other creatures. Art shows will be installed at three sites in the St. Claude district: The Ironworks, (612 Piety St.), The Front (4100 St. Claude Ave., on November 13^th only), and Kawliga Studios (3331 St. Claude Ave.).

Coming together in a collaborative venture from the East Coast, the West Coast and New Orleans, six members of a curatorial swarm—Myrtle Von Damitz III, Marnia Johnston, Amy Jenkins, Nina Nichols, Karen Kern, and Eben Kirksey—have brought together a multitude of creative agents. Over seventy artists—hailing from New Orleans, the far reaches of the United States, Europe, and Australia—will animate the shows. A full list of these participants—including internationally acclaimed artists like Kathy High, Adam Zaretsky, and Cornelia Hesse-Honeger—is available online. Multispecies Salon 3: SWARM

The swarm is a network with no center to dictate order. Swarming is the tactic, rather than the theme, of the Multispecies Salon. Three interrelated themes—orbiting around human relationships with plants, microbes, and animals—will come together in the Multispecies Salon: “Hope in Blasted Landscapes”, “Edible Companions”, and “Life in the Age of Biotechnology.” Hope in Blasted Landscapes will showcase forms of life that persist in post-industrial sites, in the aftermath of disaster. Blurring the boundaries between food and art, we will invite gallery visitors to eat Edible Companions—critters whose bios, biographical and political lives, might provoke a bit of indigestion. Life in the Age of Biotechnology will feature new organisms and machines that have been created by humans or are dependent upon on humans for their very survival.

An opening reception will take place at all three gallery sites on Saturday, November 13, from 6 pm to 10 pm, in conjunction with the Prospect 1.5 biennial and the St. Claude Art Walk. The Swarm Orbs, spherical robots that embody the tactics of our show, will be on the move outside The Front Gallery among goats from Pretty Doe Dairy, creatures involved in an urban bioremediation project. Samples from a buffet of edible insects, prepared by Zack Lemann of the Audubon Insectarium, will also be available to visitors.

Multispecies Salon events will continue the following week in association with the American Anthropological Association (AAA) conference as well as the New Orleans Fringe Festival, both from November 17-21. Internationally renowned anthropologists will give lectures about human relations with other species, free and open to the public, at Kawliga Studios (6:30-7:30 pm, on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, November 15-19).

Anthropologists will become embedded art critics at the Multispecies Salon—working alongside the curators to help stage and document the events with a live blog. Happenings in art worlds will accompany discussions at the AAA conference about the emergence of a new approach to anthropology: multispecies ethnography. Literally ethno-graphy means “people writing” and conventionally anthropologists have limited their research to human realms. “Creatures previously appearing on the margins of anthropology — as part of the landscape, as food for humans, as symbols — have been pressed into the foreground in recent ethnographies,” write Eben Kirksey and Stefan Helmreich in the November special issue of Cultural Anthropology, the flagship journal of the discipline.

...so this is my last night in Berlin. It's late, I'm tired and I've had a sniff of the brewer's apron so I'm not expecting much. But, I think I should try and capture some kind of parting thought no matter how addled. I've been here 3 months. I came here with very little expectation (maybe a few preconceptions). I saw a lot of art, I didn't see much great art or even better art (with exceptions) that I couldn't have seen anywhere else. The residency enabled me to meet some great people who do really good and interesting work. It also,... (well maybe I'm not that drunk).
I tried to balance getting the most out of the city with producing my own work, and in that respect I think I did ok. I wanted to keep the images I produced fragmented, a response to my time here and whatever I was thinking about, seeing or doing. The pieces I produced had to be smaller, quicker, abbreviated. As a collection they might appear all over the place, that makes sense. But I think the same themes and commonalities are there if you choose to look for them. I didn't intend or expect to show outside of the residency but when I got a couple of shows that changed my approach and seemed to hobble my direction..... Drawings 'attributed' to Francis Bacon.

Before I leave Berlin it was great to be able to catch a fascinating exhibit at two intimate locations in the city. Galleria Nove & Werkstattgallerie are displaying a controversial collection of around fifty drawings 'attributed' to Francis Bacon.

From a complete amateur's perspective I was a little skeptical but was told that authentication beyond all doubt, was imminent.

From the press release by curator Edward Lucie-Smith: As everyone interested in Bacon’s work knows, Bacon many times, and often vehemently, denied that he made any use of drawing. This is contradicted however by an early interview with the critic David Sylvester (Bacon’s most frequent interlocutor), which is preserved on film. In it, Bacon admits that he does draw, but coyly says that puts his drawings aside and doesn’t look at them, when the moment comes to paint a picture. Yet, since Bacon’s lonely death in Madrid in 1992, a mass of evidence has emerged to show that he not only did draw, but drew prolifically.

“Breaking Windows”, a group exhibition looking at social entropy through projects addressing ideas of order and disorder. I nearly walked right passed the sound piece concerning the events at Jonestown and it was probably one of the most affecting pieces.

Finally made it to Styx and saw the opening of Michael Stoke's second show there, Resevoir.
I think the space is pretty fantastic and almost felt like a piece itself.
Styx Project Space is on the second floor of the old Brewery Friedrichshöhe building. I guess it's kind of like what the Tacheles building used to be like before, well, you know...

Went to the opening of a group show at Coaching Culture Gallery in the Alte Kindl-Brauerei in Neukolln. The space was amazing. Artists included: Cornelia Enderlein, Michael Kilian Wagner, Oliver Dehn, Young-Sik Lee.

Next door was another opening (for not sure what) in what is the space for the Solaris Project.

I'm not sure if I'd ever seen ceramics presented in the dark before.

A gallery employee handed you a dim 'lantern' as you entered with which you illuminated (and tried not to bump into) large heavily glazed stalagmites in the first room. In the second room you looked up to see an assortment of grotesque and carnivalesque masks (that reminded me of James Ensor paintings) hanging from the ceiling.

I have just returned from the opening of Dirty Bird, photos by Steven James Scott. Proceeds from the show will be donated to The Audobon Society, to benefit ongoing bird rescue & cleanup efforts in the Gulf.

Really enjoyed Dream Passage, Bruce Nauman's first major retrospective in Berlin.
It was the first time I'd seen so many of his works in one place, made all the more effective with comparatively few visitors while I was there.
