Technological change has made itself felt in all areas of our lives and is impacting social developments around the world. Life without the technical innovations of recent decades has become unimaginable. Although we as users of digital devices produce and consume several hundred megabytes of data each day, the digital realm remains invisible—and, for many, intangible.
The artists in the exhibition Behind the Screenexamine these developments. With an awareness of how behaviour and thinking can be shaped by technological change, they use digital technologies and visual languages as a medium and tool of artistic processes. Beyond a mere reflection, their works make digital transformations visible in analogue form.

Jonathan Monk
Exhibit Model Four – plus invited guests
10 March – 21 July 2019

Under the title Exhibit Model Four – plus invited guests, British artist Jonathan Monk (*1969, Leicester) continues his exhibition series, which began in 2016 as a kind of retrospective, and which he has conceptually expanded for the KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art.
Exhibit Model Four is an installation consisting of walls covered in photographic wallpaper throughout the M1 exhibition space. The photographs, mostly in black and white, show his own works from the past twenty years in various exhibition contexts. At KINDL, Monk will combine these works, depicted on photographic sheets, with actual artworks by other artists from his personal collection, installed in the exhibition space. He thus offers a multilayered take on the conditions of exhibiting and presenting art.

Sofia Hultén
Unstable Fakers of Change in Self
25 November 2018 – 31 März 2019

With Unstable Fakers of Change in Self, the KINDL – Centre for Contemporary Art presents a new series of works by Sofia Hultén which the artist has developed for the Maschinenhaus M0. She uses conventional scaffolding as the material for her works, which she constructs in different ways, adding various materials and combining them with videos. The result is a group of free-standing sculptures in which Hultén breaks up temporal structures and causal relationships and negotiates dimensions of possibilities.
The starting point for the exhibition’s somewhat cryptic title is Umberto Boccioni’s 1913 bronze sculpture Unique Forms of Continuity in Space, an iconic Futurist work, which is featured on the Italian twenty-cent coin. Sofia Hultén uses the initial letters of the words in the title to form her own combinations of words, which she uses for the exhibition title, Unstable Fakers of Change in Self, as well as the titles of the works.
The individual works literally consist of a framework whose parts are characterised by various kinds of traces. The videos distributed across the sculptures show how the artist adds spray paint, coins, cable ties, buckets, and nets to the scaffolding. She thus provides concrete clues about how these traces came to be. Hultén playfully defies linear sequences and upends the principle of cause and effect: instead of temporal continuity and chains of causation, she emphasises simultaneity and the wide range of possibilities. Everything could have turned out quite differently, after all.
