Oscar Castillo. Berlin Tropical. Gallery Possum, Berlin.

Press Release:
Oscar Castillo’s works are the result of a search for a fixed point where the inner and outer worlds meet and enter into creative conflict. Here, the outer world stands for expansion and a centripetal force, and the inner world for contraction and a centrifugal force.
Ocar Castillo, who was born in Mexico and came to Germany in 1999, works in both countries, and often finds himself, both biographically and artistically, in a conflict zone between a technological, rationalised world and the unconscious and mythical parts of our existence.
As a result of this conflict, scenes of sensuous colours emerge in Oscar Castllo’s work, which, on a deeper level than our understanding, hint at the origins of human existance.
(conversation note Oscar Castillo – Bernd Haas)

My Sparring Partner: Anna Steele

As part of the upcoming group show at Jedlitschka Gallery in Zürich I was asked to select an artist to show alongside me, as my 'sparring-partner'.

Chris Dennis. I said I paint the same things again and again because I think about the same things again and again.

I first met Anna in 2010, in Berlin, where we both participated in the same Artist Residency
Born in Brisbane, Australia and primarily a painter, she has also worked with photography and installation. After completing the residency, Anna decided to make Berlin her home but returns to Melbourne regularly.

Anna Steele. The Bounded Is Loathed By It's Possessor

I have not spoken to Anna about the starting point or 'stories' behind her work. In my ignorance and corrupted by my own painting, it is hard for me not to impose some form of autobiography onto the images. Frequently solitary, isolated figures (in this case predominantly female, appear lost, floating or falling, within barren or empty landscapes.

It will be obvious to anyone that is familiar with my own work why I would be so drawn to Anna's painting. It will be great to see her again and share the wall with her.

Michaela Gleave - Our Frozen Moment.

Michaela Gleave was a fellow Takt resident in Berlin during 2010.
This is her installation at Performance Space in Sydney, Australia. Looks awesome, wish I could have seen/experienced it.

From Press Release:
Our Frozen Moment is an atmospheric-based installation by Michaela Gleave, a large-scale experiment in space, light and the possibilities that shape our perception of the universe.  Presented as a stage-like set, the viewer is invited to step into a ‘field of stars’ as a mass of tiny droplets spark briefly into existence before disappearing from view.
Our Frozen Moment references optical phenomena such as ‘prisoner’s cinema’, the atmospheric condition ‘diamond dust’, and ‘frozen’ stars thought to be fueled by dark matter. The installation places the viewer at the centre of a universe, a performer in their own theatrical set, their own unique presence in the space-time continuum held up for view.
This project is supported by the Australia Council through the Visual Arts Board.
