The Solo-Project 2015. Basel (Part 1).

I was under the wrong impression that The Solo Project was a new fair. This is actually their EIGHTH installment and perhaps goes to show how hard it is the make your voice heard amongst all the clangour of Art Basel. The website claims to - 'address a number of qualities we consider to be missing from the international art agenda'. It is hard to see how they achieve this and the St. Jakobshalle venue certainly doesn't have the character or impact of VOLTA's Markthalle, or the old brewery that is home to LISTE. That being said, the quality of the WORK (and that is the point of all this, right? ) presented by a small, but diverse selection of galleries, that I found to be welcoming and engaged, made for a very worthwhile visit.

Bruno Streich. Satellite s18
This impressive piece benefited from having the creator Bruno Streich on hand to offer some guidance. - When the ends of the satellite are approached Theremin style technology is activated by your proximity and the sounds of alien communication and storms on Saturn are emitted from each end.

Outstanding paintings by Anna Leonhardt, once again proving scale has nothing to do with impact.

VOLTA 11, Art Fair 2015 (part 1). Basel

From the outside looking in, it still feels that VOLTA (11) is the satellite fair to beat for location, organization, gallery selection and work presented (still not crazy about the catalogue though). This year, I made it my first stop and have cut the post in two to avoid any loading issues.
